WrestleMania III was the third WrestleMania to take place in the WTX Universe. The previous pay-pay-view to this WrestleMania was King of the Ring which took place on March 2nd. The follow up event, Backlash, took place on May 4th.
There were a total of 11 matches on the card, all but one match were championship matches. The opening match was a Triple Threat match with the United States Championship on the line. Ryback, The Miz, and Kurt Angle were the participants in this match. The following match was a WWE Tag Team Championship match between "Bad Influence" Daniels & Kazarian and Christian & Chris Hero. The third match was an Armageddon Hell in a Cell match for the Hardcore Championship. The Great Destroyer defended the belt against five other mystery opponents. The revealed opponents were Brock Lesnar, Antonio Cesaro, Eddie Guerrero, Mick Foley, and Big E Langston. The fourth match was the only match that wasn't contested for a title belt. Alice Lovecraft & Winter represented RAW while Layla & Michelle McCool represented SmackDown in a SmackDown vs. RAW Diva's Tag Match. The following match was the Cruiserweight Championship Ladder Match. Xavier Woods went up against Trent Barreta, Tyson Kidd, Zack Ryder, Justin Gabriel, and The Hurricane. Following this was a World Tag Team Championship TLC Match where The Disciples of Darkness, The Great Destroyer & Crimzon, defended their belts against the one-night-only reunion of "Team D-Z" Dolph Ziggler & Daniel Bryan. The seventh match to take place was for the Intercontinental Championship. Leo Kruger went toe to toe with Bruno Sammartino. Kruger had stated weeks before this event had taken place that "Everything you know is about to change" and the 'change' that took place was the transformation of Leo Kruger into Adam Rose. The following match was an NXT Tag Team Championship match that was contested inside a Steel Cage. The United Kingdom's William Regal and Adrian Neville faced off against former allies "Celtic Cross" Drew McIntyre & Sheamus. With the added stipulation that Drew McIntyre would be affected by the draft and if he won the match, he would remain on NXT instead of moving to RAW, which he was drafted to as part of the 2014 Draft. The NXT Main Event saw Ted DiBiase Jr. face of against father Ted DiBiase in a grudge match for the NXT Championship. The SmackDown Main Event saw The Undertaker take on Edge for the WWE Championship in an I-Quit Match. CM Punk and Wade Barrett took the main stage in WrestleMania's Main Event. The match was for the World Heavyweight Championship and was a 30-Minute Iron Man match. Due to Wade Barrett being drafted to Raw, if he won the match he would bring the World Heavyweight Championship permanently to Raw.
The show saw six new champions crowned throughout the event. In the opening match The Miz caught an unexpected victory over former champion Ryback to become the new United States Champion. Newly formed team Christian & Chris Hero would go on to end Bad Influence's third WWE Tag Team Championship reign becoming the new champions. Mick Foley would pick up his second Hardcore Championship win (his first under the Mankind persona) by pinning the then-champion Jaichi. Justin Gabriel successfully climbed the ladder to retrieve the Cruiserweight Championship ending a very short reign from former champion Xavier Woods. Finally, in the main event Wade Barrett would defeat CM Punk with 15 victories over Punk's 14 to become the World Heavyweight Champion effectively bringing the championship with him to the Raw brand.
The fourth match of the night saw Raw diva's Alice Lovecraft & Winter defeat the SmackDown team of Laycool (Layla & Michelle McCool) in a brand warfare tag team match.
There were four championship retains on the event, the first saw longest reigning World Tag Team Champions The Disciples of Darkness (Jaichi & Crimzon) defeat Team D-Z in a TLC Match. Leo Kruger who had changed his persona to Adam Rose defeat WWE Legend Bruno Sammartino to retain his Intercontinental Championship. In the first main event Ted DiBiasr Jr. retained his NXT Championship against Ted DiBiase Sr. in a retirement match, this also saw the end of many NXT superstars who were aligned with DiBiase Sr's careers as well. In the second from last main event The Undertaker forced Edge into saying "I Quit" to retain his WWE Championship in a vicious battle.
