In February, Samoa Joe competed in the Elimination Chamber to become NXT Champion, defeating the former champion Cody Rhodes, as well as Yoshi Tatsu, Tyson Kidd, Alberto Del Rio & Wade Barrett. At WrestleMania II Joe retained the championship against former champion Cody Rhodes. Joe then defended the championship successfully against former world champion CM Punk at Backlash.

The next week, Joe was scheduled to face Rhyno with CM Punk as guest referee, however, the main event was once again cancelled when Rhyno attacked both Punk & Joe in the backstage area. At Extreme Rules, Joe defended his championship against both Punk & Rhyno, losing the championship to CM Punk.

Joe invoked his rematch clause the following week on the May 22nd edition of NXT, however, the match was cancelled as Joe was ambushed by Rhyno, Tommy Dreamer, Raven & Punk, leading to the ECW takeover of NXT.
