Royal Rumble Winner & Draft to SmackDown (2015)
At Royal Rumble, Rusev competed in the 2015 Royal Rumble Match, entering at #40 and winning the match when he last eliminated Damien Sandow, earning a world championship main event at WrestleMania IV. It was revealed that Rusev would face Batista for the NXT Championship, leading to Rusev facing off against several top NXT stars in the weeks leading to WrestleMania, defeating former champions like Sheamus and Kofi Kingston. At WrestleMania IV, Rusev lost to Batista in their I Quit championship match, making Rusev the first man to win the Royal Rumble and then lose at the following WrestleMania. The following night, as part of the 2015 Draft, Rusev was drafted from NXT to SmackDown. He quickly bounced back from his WrestleMania loss, defeating Kurt Angle for the United States Championship on April 10th. On April 24th, Rusev rebranded the United States Championship, calling it the European Championship as he did not want to represent America. At Judgment Day, Rusev lost the championship in a Triple Threat to Jinder Mahal, who reverted the championship back.
On the following episode of SmackDown, Rusev invoked his rematch clause, losing to Mahal as The Great Khali returned and attacked Rusev, giving Mahal the easy win.
Return to NXT (2016-2017)
On April 4th Rusev returned to NXT as part of the 2016 Draft, he competed in his first match back on NXT on April 27th in a #1 contenders match against The Rock for the NXT Championship. Rusev defeated The Rock via submission with The Accolade. It was then confirmed that Rusev would face Kevin Owens for the championship at TakeOver: Dallas. After Owens tried to send a message to Rusev and failed, losing to Big Show on NXT. Rusev faced Big Show on May 18th to prove that he could do what Owens couldn't, however, Big Show won again. Upon this victory, Big Show was added to the NXT Championship Match at TakeOver: Dallas. Rusev finally defeated Big Show on May 25th in a tag team match, pinning Big Show off of an Alabama Slam.
At TakeOver: Dallas, Rusev was unsuccessful as Big Show was pinned by Owens off of a Popup Powerbomb to retain the championship. The following episode of NXT, Rusev attacked Owens as Owens was making his entrance, issuing another challenge for Money in the Bank and stating that Owens did not pin or submit Rusev. At Money in the Bank, Rusev defeated Kevin Owens via pinfall to become the new NXT Champion, starting Rusev's first world championship reign.
At New Years Revolution, Rusev challenged for the United States Championship held by Sami Zayn in a Triple Threat Match also featuring Sting, at the event, Rusev took the pinfall off of a Helluva Kick for Zayn to retain the championship. On the first NXT of 2017, Rusev defeated Tyson Kidd to qualify for the 2017 Royal Rumble Match.

On April 2nd 2017, Rusev was drafted from ECW to SmackDown as part of the 2017 Draft.
