United States Champion & Departure (2016)
Rikishi competed in his first match in 2016 on the March 24th edition of NXT, failing to qualify for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania V. Despite this, Rikishi competed at WrestleMania V as a participant in the Yokozuna Memorial Battle Royal, winning the Battle Royal by last eliminating Sheamus. Rikishi then immediately challenged John Cena on the April 6th edition of NXT after Cena lost to NXT Champion Kevin Owens. Rikishi defeated Cena after a competitive fight, winning his first championship, the United States Championship.
Rikishi then gave Cena his rematch on the April 20th edition of NXT, losing the match via disqualification, but keeping his championship due to the champions advantage. As Dean Ambrose faced John Cena on the April 27th edition of NXT, Rikishi said that if Ambrose won, he would give him a shot. The following week Rikishi faced Ambrose with the championship on the line, defeated Ambrose after a Banzai Drop. It was also revealed on the May 4th edition of NXT that Rikishi would defend his championship against Booker T who defeated Randy Savage via countout to earn a shot at TakeOver: Dallas. Rikishi gave Savage another chance, with Savage defeating Rikishi to join the match. At TakeOver: Dallas, Booker T won the United States Championship, pinning Rikishi.
After being informed that he would have to wait up to a month for his rematch, Rikishi terminated his contract with NXT.
