Debut & United States Championship Pursuit (2016-2017)
Mil Muertes made his WTX Universe debut on the January 7th edition of SmackDown, facing off against the reigning United States Champion, John Cena. Muertes got a big upset victory, beginning a rivalry between Cena & Muertes for the championship. The following week, Muertes faced Cena for the championship, losing the match this time. Muertes got another opportunity for the championship at No Way Out, this time in a Fatal 4-Way Match also featuring Dolph Ziggler & Booker T. The match ended with Cena pinning Ziggler to retain his championship once again.
In March, Cena was taken out by an anonymous superstar later revealed to be CM Punk. Before Punk had been revealed however, Muertes was accused of attacking Cena alongside Chris Jericho, Booker T & Sami Zayn. Due to the issues between Cena, Muertes, Booker, Punk, Zayn & Jericho, a United States Championship Elimination Chamber Match took place at WrestleMania V in which Cena retained again, last pinning Mil Muertes. Muertes was then drafted to NXT the next night as part of the 2016 draft. On May 4th it was announced that Muertes would face John Cena at TakeOver: Dallas in a #1 contenders match for the United States Championship. At TakeOver: Dallas, Muertes defeated Cena in his NXT debut to become the new contender for the United States Championship. Following the match, Muertes was attacked by the returning Pentagon Jr., Muertes then faced Pentagon on the following episode of NXT, after Vampiro revealed that Pentagon was sent to destroy and recruit Muertes as one of Vampiro's own. Muertes lost the match to Pentagon.
Despite losing to Pentagon, Muertes invoked his match with Booker T for the June 15th edition of NXT. Vampiro warned Muertes that he was not whole and would lose the match as he wasn't even a quarter of his usual strength. Vampiro was proven correct as Booker squashed and easily defeated Muertes to retain.
On the debut episode of ECW, which replaced NXT, Muertes was announced as a participant in the United States Championship match at WrestleMania VI, as well as Kevin Owens, Jeff Hardy and of course, champion Sami Zayn.
Return to SmackDown (2017-present)
