John Cena is a member of the RAW roster as of 2017. He is a former United States Champion, holding two records during the reign as longest reigning champion with 195 days, as well as the most successful defending champion, with 10 defences.
Despite never winning a single match in the WTX Universe, Cena was given a United States Championship opportunity from Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania XXVII alongside the man he had constantly lost to, Mason Ryan. Ryan would once again defeat Cena to become the new United States Champion.
Cena was given yet another shot at Over The Limit in a Championship Scramble alongside Steamboat, Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston and the retaining champion Mason Ryan. Cena then took a brief time away from in-ring competition, not appearing for the rest of Season 1.
On the debut episode of Season 2, Cena returned to action on Raw, defeating Santino Marella. In the following weeks, Cena got involved in the world championship scene, working alongside as well as against the likes of CM Punk, Kane and the WWE Champion, Austin Aries. At TLC, Cena faced all three in a 4-Way Extreme Rules Match for Aries' championship, however, Aries retained in the match.
On May 29th 2015, Mr. Anderson called out John Cena as a joke, expecting parody character Don C. Nut, however, instead, the real John Cena made his return after three years, facing Anderson in a competitive matchup in which Cena won, revealing himself as an official part of SmackDown. On June 19th, Cena won a Battle Royal to become the new contender for the United States Championship. The following week, Cena lost a quick squash against the champion Yokozuna.
United States Champion, Move to NXT & Loss of Momentum (2015-2016)
On September 24th Cena answered an open challenge from Yokozuna for the United States Championship under I Quit rules, Cena defeated Yokozuna to win the United States Championship, his first championship win since debuting in 2012. At No Mercy, Cena faced and defeated Yokozuna again, retaining off of the STF. At Survivor Series, Cena got his first retention, defeating Booker T.
In 2016, Cena entered a feud with Mil Muertes, who debuted on the January 7th edition of SmackDown, pinning Cena in a non-title match. Due to this, Cena then gave Muertes a shot at his United States Championship the next week, defeating Muertes. Cena then was set to face Muertes once again two weeks later, this time however, Booker T challenged Cena in Muertes' place, losing to Cena on SmackDown. Because of the two rivalries with Muertes & Booker, a championship match was set at No Way Out, also featuring Dolph Ziggler. Cena retained his championship in the match, pinning Ziggler off of an Attitude Adjustment. At No Way Out, Sami Zayn defeated Daniel Bryan to earn the next shot at Cena's championship, Cena defeated Zayn the following Thursday on SmackDown.
Cena faced Chris Jericho the following week in a non-title match, defeating Jericho. Immediately after the match it was reported that Cena had been attacked backstage and would take a few weeks off due to minor injuries. Accusations began amongst Zayn, Jericho, Booker & Muertes as they had all been pursuing his championship. Two weeks later, Cena made his return, promising to reveal who had attacked him, however, before he could, he was attacked again by CM Punk, who was revealed as the man who took out Cena. Because of issues between Zayn, Jericho, Booker, Muertes, Punk & Cena, Teddy Long booked the first ever Elimination Chamber Match to take place at WrestleMania V, with Cena defeating the five at WrestleMania to retain his championship once again.
WrestleMania V also featured a 20-Man Battle Royal in tribute to the former United States Champion, who Cena defeated in his final match, Yokozuna. The match was won by Yokozuna's own relative, Rikishi, with Rikishi earning an opportunity at Cena's championship in the process. Following WrestleMania, Cena was drafted to NXT as part of the 2016 Draft. Upon arriving in NXT, Cena was booked immediately against NXT Champion Kevin Owens, with Owens defeating Cena. Immediately following the match, Rikishi invoked his championship opportunity against Cena, defeating Cena and ending his 195 day reign.
Following his championship loss, Cena began a downfall in momentum, losing to Pentagon Jr. on the following weeks on NXT. Following his loss to Pentagon, Cena invoked his rematch clause against Rikishi, however, Rikishi got himself disqualified from the match to keep his championship. Cena then faced and lost the second top contender for the United States Championship, Dean Ambrose, losing his #1 contenders spot for the championship. It was then announced on the May 4th edition of NXT that Cena would face Mil Muertes at TakeOver: Dallas in a #1 contenders match for the United States Championship. Cena finally won a match on May 18th, defeating Jeff Hardy on NXT. Cena went on to lose to Muertes at TakeOver: Dalllas. At Money in the Bank, Cena competed in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, but was unsuccessful as the match was won by Finn Balor.
Return to SmackDown (2016-2017)
On the first SmackDown of 2017, Cena defeated Carlito to qualify for the 2017 Royal Rumble Match. At the Royal Rumble event, Cena made it to the final two for the second year in a row, being eliminated last again, this time by Hideo Itami. At Elimination Chamber, Cena challenged for the World Heavyweight Championship, being eliminated from the match second to last by AJ Styles, who went on to win the match.
At Fastlane, Cena competed in the King of the Ring tournament, losing to Finn Balor in the opening round.
Return to RAW (2017-present)
On April 2nd 2017, Cena was drafted from SmackDown to RAW as part of the 2017 Draft.
