At Backlash, Orton & Batista defeated Shawn Michaels and former Evolution member Triple H to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. They then lost their championship to Team Rhodes Scholars at Cyber Sunday, leading to internal issues between Batista & Orton.
Following their championship rematch loss on the June 28th edition of SmackDown, Orton & Batista broke out into a fight backstage, with Flair trying to stop the fight between the two, Orton ended up laying out both Batista & Flair, ending the initial run of Evolution. Flair then also left the WTX Universe.
On the April 4th edition of Raw, Triple H suggested reuniting Evolution alongside Ric Flair, who had been drafted from NXT to Raw with the Intercontinental Championship, as well as Randy Orton who Triple H had just won the WWE Championship from, and Batista, who had just been drafted to Raw after losing the World Heavyweight Championship. Initially, Orton & Batista refused, insisting they wanted Triple H's championship, the three then feuded until Backlash, in which Triple H defeated both Orton & Batista, with the two suffering minor injuries.
On May 30th, Orton & Batista returned under the Evolution name as a team involved in the Joker's Wild Tournament, the team defeated Chris Jericho & JBL to advance to the semi-finals, of which they lost to Prince Puma & James Storm. Orton & Batista stated that their reason for aligning themselves with Triple H was the mentality that "if you can't beat them, you join them."
On June 8th, Ric Flair lost the Intercontinental Championship to Baron Corbin and then quit being a part of the WTX Universe, removing him from Evolution.
At Money in the Bank, Orton competed in the Tag Team Championship Money in the Bank Ladder Match, but was unsuccessful in retrieving the contract. Orton & Batista then began playing a more protective role from Triple H's WWE Championship, attacking and injuring Tye Dillinger and then Tyler Breeze on July 4th.
