The Cruiserweight Championship is a tertiary championship in the WTX Universe series available only to superstars who weigh 240lbs or less. It was the midcard championship of the NXT brand and was first introduced on 21st November 2012, it was retired on the August 17th 2015 edition of Raw, the championship came out of retirement at WTX Live! From London as a tertiary championship to be primarily defended on Main Event.

History

The Cruiserweight Championship debuted as the midcard championship for the new NXT brand on 21st November 2012, it was contested for in a Fatal 4-Way Match between Elijah Burke, Rob Van Dam, X-Pac & Jay Lethal with Burke becoming the first ever champion.

The championship was renamed the Light Heavyweight Championship and given a new loko upon X-Pac winning it at WrestleMania XXVIII, it was renamed again during Ted DiBiase Jr's reign to the ECW Light Heavyweight Championship and given another new look as part of the ECW takeover that took place between May and August of 2013.

After Xavier Woods' championship win on 15th December 2013 the championship was reverted back to the original Cruiserweight Championship image and title.

During the WWE Draft the reigning Cruiserweight Champion, Hideo Itami, was drafted to Raw, bringing the Cruiserweight Championship with him. On August 16th 2015, Itami lost the Cruiserweight Championship to Carlito. The following night on Raw, Carlito retired the Cruiserweight Championship and replaced it with the Global Championship to remove the weight restriction on Raw's midcard championship.
