Rhodes was given an opportunity at the Intercontinental Championship held by Wade Barrett at Money in the Bank, however, Rhodes was unsuccessful. Rhodes got another oppotunity, this time for the newly introduced Hardcore Championship, in a Fatal 4-Way Match, the match was won by Brock Lesnar.
At Survivor Series, Rhodes competed in yet another championship match, this time for the new NXT Championship, however, the match was won by Sin Cara who Rhodes would then enter a rivalry with over the championship.
